Fred t. korematsu |
Fred Toyosaburo Korematsu was a Japanese-American born in Oakland, California on January 30th, 1919. As an adult, Korematsu attempted to enlist in the United States National Guard after America entered the Second World War. However, although born in the U.S., Korematsu was turned away because of his Japanese descent, and instead found work as a welder. Fred labored in Oakland as a shipyard welder and eventually worked his way up in the ranks and held a supervising position. Upon arriving to work one day, he found a notice informing him to report to the union office. That day, Korematsu was fired based solely on his Japanese ancestry. Despite his outstanding work in the field, Korematsu’s race was all that seemed to matter.
